Talk around the sports world

The city of Tampa Florida had a very busy week last week.  The Tampa Bay Rays signed Johnny Damon (5 million) and Manny Ramirez (2 million) to one year contracts.  Both players were part of the "IDIOTS" who helped bring the Boston Red Sox to the promised land by winning the 2004 World Series.  Can these two aging players help Tampa stay in contention?  Our belief is the team (Tampa) lost too much talent to stay close for very long.  Let us know how You feel.  One thing we are sure of is that April will be much more interesting when Tampa comes to Fenway Park with their new additions.

Also in the news was Derek Jeter receiving an occupancy permit for his new 30,000 plus square foot home in Tampa.  The home, which sits right on the water, is the largest in the city.  His penthouse in Manhattan is for sale with an asking price in the neighborhood of 20 million dollars.  That is a very nice neighborhood to be in.

In the pro boxing scene Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2 38 ko's) defends his welterweight title against Shane Mosley (46-6-1 39 ko's) on May 7 at MGM Las Vegas.  The fight will air on PPV Showtime which will be the first time in years that Manny will not be on HBO.  Pacquiao, who basically takes on any fighter, is anxious to get it on with Floyd Mayweather Jr.  From the Mayweather camp trainer (uncle) Roger Mayweather says he believes Mosley will beat Pacquiao.  Now is this wishful thinking on their part so they do not have to fight Pacquiao, or does the Mayweather camp really believe that?  Our thoughts are the Mayweather camp does not want to fight Pacquiao. What do you think?

Speaking on the subject of boxing, last week Tony Demarco was honored at the Boston's sports Museum for his contributions to the fight game and the North End community.  Tony beat Johnny Saxon (1955) for the welterweight title of the world.  Only two months later he lost the title to Carmen Basilio in an epic battle in Syracuse New York.  Excuse me, but when was the last time in modern boxing that a champ defended his title after only holding it for 2 months?

Around the NBA
Lakers coach Phil Jackson was recently asked about meeting the Miami Heat in the NBA finals and the response was very telling.  Jackson basically said he did not think it was the Heat he had to worry about, but the Boston Celtics were the team to beat.  His thinking was that the Heat were not ready as a team yet.  He believes the Celtics, with their age and experience (excluding injuries), have what it takes to win it all.  Last year Jackson told his team during a time out in the NBA finals that the Celtics were a team that seemed to falter late in games.  Could Jackson be ready to eat them words? Sports Gabbers believes that with the addition of Shaq and the return of Perkins (early February ) they have the talent and know how to bring another banner to the Garden.

In the world of horse racing Zenyatta (19 - 1) was voted horse of the year.  She won 19 in a row before losing her last race to" Blame "in the Breeders Cup Classic.  Zenyatta, who was far off the pace, came on late and just missed a late bid down the stretch to finish 2nd to Blame in the Classic.  Zenyatta also won the first ever "VOICE OF THE PEOPLE AWARD."  The award was created by Penny Chenery, owner of Secretariat (shown here), and will be presented at Santa Anita Park on Feb.5

In the world of golf ,Tiger Woods, for the first time in 5 years, did not finish number one.  He finished third behind Lee Westwood #1 and Martin Kaymer #2.  Tiger, after dealing with marital problems beginning in November 2009, has not been the same. The feeling among the people in the know is that Tiger is no longer the dominant player he once was.
Our question to You is can Tiger ever be the force he once was ?
