N.L. EAST

Sounds like the Phillies have ordered their World Series rings already.I guess with a pitching staff of Roy Halliday,Cliff Lee,Roy Oswalt,Cole Hammels and Joe Blanton they have good reason to be optimistic.Ryan Howard,Chase Utley
should provide enough run support for this staff.Jimmy Rollins needs to have a comeback year and 3rd base could be an issue. The outfield without Jason Werth(signed with Washington)will be much weaker offensively and defensively. The bullpen, although not strong will not be overworked with their starters going deep.So getting to closer Brad Lidge should not be a problem. So I guess We are not going out on a limb picking Phillies.

With just one contact we can take care of all your ticket needs in Boston.

Atlanta Braves starting pitching is the key.Led by Tommy Hanson along with Derek Lowe and Tim Hudson should make life easier for suspect bullpen. The aquisition of Dan Uggla(via trade) will provide much needed power to a young lineup.Martin Prado who filled in nicely last season at 2nd base will now be asked to play left field. We believe this young man will adjust very nicely and along with heralded rookie (2010) Jason Heyward and Nate McLouth, it should be a fun outfield to watch. The infield with Uggla,Alex gonzalez, aging 3rd baseman Chipper Jones and young Freddie Freeman will have to play good "d" in order to stay out of bullpen. We think Braves have enough to stay in Wild Card hunt.

The Florida Marlins will surprise some people in the N.L.East.Good looking young prospects like Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison will provide some much needed outfield power.Omar Infante aquired from Braves will give infield a little more punch to go along with Hanley Ramirez and 1st baseman Gaby Sanchez. The young pitching seem primed to make a name for themselves.Josh Johnson,Anibal Sanchez,Ricky Nolasco and others are joined by veteran Javier Vazquez who should perform better in theN.L.Their bullpen with Clay Hensley,Ryan Webb, and Michael Dunn(needs to cut down walks) should get them to closer Leo Nunez, who should get better.Thinking is that this young bunch gained much needed experience last season ,and will be in Wild Card chase.

The New York Mets well what can you say.Starting with ownership being in financial trouble and often injured Johan Santana possible return in mid season, they seem to be headed in wrong direction.Carlos Beltran's health is always an issue. The center fielder needs to be a big part of this floundering team. Can David Wright equal last years power numbers after 2 down years? Will Santana be ready in June or is his season over? Can Pitcher R.A. Dickey repeat his career year of 2010 at age 36?Will team overcome ownership's turmoil?Bright spot is outfielder Angel Pagan who provided some power and speed after finding spot in outfield,he should steadily improve. As you can see there are a lot of question marks.

We have tickets to all events click below for details.

Word is that Washington Nationals young pitching star Stephen Strasburg may be ready sometime late 2011.Our thinking here is why risk it and allow him more time and progress slowly. The free agent signing of Jayson Werth(overpaid)will not help a team that needs too much.Young, promising talent(1st pick overall)Bryce Harper will most likely begin the year in triple a ball.Management says he will not be brought up to Majors this season, and We hope that this so.Pitching staff with aging Livan Hernandez and Jason Marquis leading the way just won't get it done.Bullpen may be an even bigger concern. The closer of the future for team  may be Drew Storen who had mixed showings late in 2010.Storen had great S.O.numbers but needs to work on control to cut back on walks.Future is not in 2011.

A.L. WEST

  1. UPDATE: ADAM WAINWRIGHT ONE OF ST. LOUIS CARDINALS FRONT LINE PITCHERS OUT WITH TOMMY JOHN SURGERY.
Texas Rangers figure to be in the mix to the end.The loss of Cliff Lee obviously hurts the pitching staff, but strong lineup can pick some of slack. The rotation of C.J.Wilson,Colby Lewis, Brandon Webb(minor setback will not be pitching off mound for a few days) has to keep them in the game to get to Alexi Ogando and closer Neftali Feliz.Lineup is completely stacked with Josh Hamilton, new comer Adrian Beltre,Elvis Andrus,Ian Kinsler and others give the Rangers the best hitting lineup in baseball.Mike Napoli(via Toronto from Angels)gives them depth at catcher,1st base and D.H.Michael Young the D.H. should be just fine with Napoli fillimg in multiple rolls.Look for Texas to be on top in the end.

On the West Coast the Los Angeles Angels made big news this off season.Trading for Vernon Wells (And his huge contract) made headlines  throuhout baseball.Outfield of Vernon Wells with Tori Hunter(Wells to left Hunter to right)both replaced by center fielder Peter Bourjos will be among the best in baseball.Their pitching staff is good but questions remain. Will Scott Kazmir return to the pitcher of Tampa years.Dan Haren will be the key to this staff, without his success there is not much chance of Angels overtaking Texas.Good infield play will help, but bullpen needs to remain solid and that is a big question.Angels will make interesting, but we do not believe they can last.

In Oakland the A's signed free agent Hideki Matsui to be the D.H. Trade for outfielders David DeJesus and Josh Willingham to go along Coco Crisp to make this the best part of a weak team. The pitching staff led by Ben Sheets,Justin Duchscherer and Dallas Braden are not exactly the Phillies starters.Their bullpen will be tested early and often with this staff.Lack of infield defense will put bigger strain on starters and overworked bullpen. No offensive punch other than maybe D.H.gives them little chance to compete other than for last in division with Seatle.

For the Seatle Mariners Felix Hernandez and Jason Vargas head a staff that otherwise needs lots of help.Bullpen's bright spot David Aardsma probably won't be ready until mid May.Outfield of Ichiro,Bradley and guttierrez can be bright spot if Milton Bradley decides to play to his talent.Infield offense is non existing along with not very good defense means bullpen will be getting lots of work.Maybe some young pitching prospects will get their chance to perform and give Seatle fans something to look forward to.

A.L Central

The Chicago White Sox,with the team's highest payroll in their history figure to be there until the end.Starting pitching with Mark Buehrle heading the staff should be ok with the return of Jake Peavy probably sometime in May.The middle of the lineup should be potent with the aquisition of free agent Adam Dunn to go along with Paul Konerko and the hopeful return to form of Carlos Quentin.Middle and back end of bullpen should be ok even with the loss of Jenks and Putz.Chris Sale,Sergio Santos and Jesse Crain to go along with Tony Pena will man the bullpen quite well.Look for the White Sox to battle for Central Division and beat out the rest.

Detroit Tiger Miguel Cabrera at it again.Last week with spring training just getting started he was again arrested for D.U.I.To add insult to injury He decided while being questioned (with opened bottle on passenger seat)to take a drink in front of officer pure arrogance. As for the teams success the starting rotation is key.Justin Verlander needs to get off to a better start than he has in the past couple of years.Along with Rick Porcello and Phil Coke they should be formidable.Getting to that 1-2 punch in the back of bullpen(Joaquin Benoit and Joel Zumaya)could be a big problem. The addition of catcher Victor Martinez(free agent) the middle of the lineup with Him,Maggglio Ordonez and Miguel Carbrera is quite good.We think they can stay in contention but just fall short.
UPDATE:  Miguel Cabrera will not be in camp for a few days.Belief is he is having some sort of treatment or therapy.

The Minnesota Twins have two big questions in regards to health. Both Justin Morneau and closer Joe Nathan need to make full  recovery in order for Twins to stay competitive. The starting rotation of Francisci Liriano(had a little setback the past week),Kevin Slowey,Nick Blackburn,Carl Pavano and whom ever may be the 5th starter will be adequate.Tha addition of Jim Thome will help Mauer and Morneau in the middle of the order. Our thought is the middle of the bullpen will not be enough to get to an even healthy Nathan.Twins alaways manage to stay competitive but just don't have enough.

The Cleveland Indians need Grady Sizemore and catcher Carlos Santana to be 100% healthy in order to get off to a much needed quick start.Starting rotation will be headed by Fausto Carmona their ace lefthander.Justin Masterson needs to be more consistent and get deeper into most games.the rest of rotation is guess work and middle relief needs to do their part so team can get to reliable closer Chris Perez. There is a good core of young prospects and we believe some will make the Majors and help the rebuilding Indians.Outlook is not very good, but some prospects can surprise.

Need good seats?Contact Beantown Concierge we look forward to hearing from you.

The outlook for the Kansas City Royals is grim.Let's begin with starting pitchers. The best we can say is to look for young prospects Everett Teaford,Aaron Crow,Danny Duffy and others to make Major League roster and have some impact. The loss of Zack Greinke leaves staff without a quality starter.Bullpen weak and may not be able to get to reliable closer Joakim Soria.New outfield of Alex Gordon(former hot shot third baseman)Melky Cabrera and Jeff Francoeur dosen't do it for me.Power hitting prospects Clint Robinson(1st base)and Mike Moustakis(3rd base) should be with the team by late May early June. They should have these kids in the lineup and give the fans something to look forward to.

Beantown's View

Now that football is over let's go around the horn.
THE AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST
With the addition of Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez, the Red Sox figure to be contenders for years to come. These signings have improved both their offense and defense while adding additional speed in Crawford.Their Bullpen, which was dreadful last season is much improved.By acquiring Bobby Jenks and Dan Wheeler it gives the Red Sox a back end of Bard,Jenks and Papelbon all could close on most teams. You put Wheeler in the middle it makes life a lot easier for starters to be more relaxed.Speaking of starters with a rotation of Lester,Buckholtz,Lackey,Beckett and Dice K on paper you figure to be all set.Unfortunately the game is played on the field not on paper.Questions remain about both Lackey and Beckett. We believe with a year under his belt pitching in A.L. East and at Fenway Park John Lackey will be more like the pitcher He was in the past.On the other hand Josh Beckett needs to shut down his ego, thinking He can just throw the ball by hitters. The feeling is that the stories about small injuries are put out to cover his sorry little a--.Red Sox Nation needs Josh to pitch like the gutsy kid he once was.

Red Sox Nation let's not buy our World Series seats yet.The New York Yankees are not going away any time soon.Although the Yankees lost the Cliff Lee and the retirement of Andy Pettite they will be there until the bitter end. With the addition of Rafael Soriano(45 saves last year with Tampa)gives them possibly the best back end 1-2 punch with Mariano Rivera. They also added catcher Russel Martin who is projected to be the starter ahead of Jore Posada. If healthy he could be huge addition to an already potent offensive lineup.Baseball fans believe me the Yankees will be contending for the A.L.East Title until the very end.

The Toronto Blue Jays with new manager John Farrell will make things interesting for a while. With the trade of Tori Hunter to the Angels, they trade for centerfielder Davis (Oakland) who has great speed and will leadoff. The trading of Hunter to Angels for Juan rivera and Mike Napoli allowed them to send Napoli to Texas for closer Frank Francisco. The Jays need Adam Lind to rebound after off year. Will Jose Batista repeat last year's production? Can promising young outfielder Travis Snyder(23) stay healthy and perform like a first round draft choice? All these concerns have to be positive for the Jays to stay in contention.

In Tampa the Rays will have a totaly revamped team.We feel the bullpen will suffer the most. The losses there include closer Rafael Soriano ( Yankees) set up man Joaquin Benoit (Tigers) middle men Dan Wheeler and Grant Balfour all of whom were extremely important in last year's strong season.Matt Garza, traded to Cubs for a couple of good young prospects, will be replaced by 24 year old Jeremy Hellickson on the back end of the rotation.Their other starters headed by Price should be just fine. They have a good core of young talent led by Evan Longoria and B.J.Upton (who needs to bounce back)to complimant the additions of Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon. The loss of Carl Crawford with his speed, defense and occasional power will surely be missed. We look for Tampa to stay close for a while but will start to fade by mid to late July.

In Baltimore the Orioles were more active this offseason than in the past.Their infield was totally revamped with the additions of 1b Derrek Lee(free agency)
ss Mark Reynolds(trade) and  3b JJ Hardy(trade)leaving only Brian Roberts at 2b as the only holdover. As usual in the strong American League East the pitching will be key to winning. The young pitching staff will be lead by Brian Matusz and Brad Bergesen.Bullpen help was provided with addition of free agent Kevin Gregg to help last years closer Koji Uehara. Also late in the off season they added free agent Vladimir Guerrero to be the D.H. who should help with an already good offensive team.We believe that Manager Buck Showwalter will have a difficult time keeping his team competitive in A.L.East.

With spring training around the corner, the baseball talk is heating up.Word out of the New York Yankee camp is that  they are waiting on a decision by Andy Pettite on whether he returns or not.S.I.is repoting that Yankees have or will make him an offer of 12 million to return for one more season.Feeling is there is a strong possibility he will return .

On the Vladimir Guerrero watch it seems his chances for 2 year contract (which he was initialy looking for )are sliipping away. With the signing of Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez (Tampa),Texas signing Adrian Beltre making Michael Young the DH and the Angels trading for Vernon Wells, his signing with one of these teams would be in a diminished capacity. The Baltimore Orioles are still interested.

In the NBA Boston Celtics center Cedrick Perkins returned early (1/25) from knee surgery suffered in game 6 of NBA finals to a standing ovation at the T D Garden.Perk played some 16 minutes looked healthy but you could see some rust in his game.
On the Carmello Anthony trade talks New Jersey Nets Owner(Mikhail Prokhoroul)saying that the Nets were out of the Anthony hunt. Some around the NBA think that the New York Knicks may still have an interest.

On the ice "THE GREAT ONE"who turned 50 on 1/26/2011 scored his last point(an assist) in last game played April 18th 1999. It was point number 2857,of which 894 were goals. The NHL's all time leading scorer's best year is thought to be 1985-86 season in which he registered 215 points (52 goals 163 assists).Do we think we will ever see numbers like that again?

The World Series of Poker will be held May 31st thru July 19th at the Rio All Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. There are 7000 entrants with total prize money of one hundred and eighty million dollars. The winners share will be almost 9 million dollars.Jonathan Duhamel 2010's winner( the first Canadien born citizen to win the tournament) took home the prize money of over $8,500,000.

Ann and Jerry Moss owners of 2010 horse of the year Zenyatta announce that their horse will be bred with Bernardini for her first mate.Bernardini is the son of the very successful AP Indy, who is from the great triple crown winner Seatle Slew.We will stay tuned for the news from the" Maternity Ward".

On the gridiron Jay Cutler is being verbally harrassed on the airwaves and the print media for his performance or lack of in the NFC Championsip gane. The question of whether injury was serious enough to take himself out of game will probably never be answered. The feeling of most people (including Sports Gabbers)is the Cutler should have continued to play and suck it up for his teamates and fans.
As reported in the New York Post Jan.6 2011 ESPN will pay nearly 2 Billion dollars a year to continue broadcasting MondayNight Football. Now talk of a lockout seems utterly ridiculous to us.We seem to think with the money thrown at NFL both sides can come to a mutual agreement.Let's just play football and be sensible.
